During the Cold War, the Glienicker bridge in Berlin was the scene of spectacular exchanges of western and eastern spies. Destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt in 1948 and ceremonially christened the "Bridge of Unity" in 1949. After its closure in 1952, it became popularly known as the "Bridge of Discord".
