Discovery of America

Christopher Columbus "discovered" America in 1492. On board the Santa Maria, his mission on behalf of the Spanish throne was to find a western sea route to India. Although Columbus reached the coast of Central America on his various journeys, he remained convinced that he had found a new route to the Orient. Only after his death was it realised that he had discovered a new continent.
