Pont St.-Bénézet in Avignon

The song "Sur le Pont d'Avignon" made this bridge internationally famous. It was constructed across the Rhône in 1187 and at 900 metres was the longest bridge during the Middle Ages. Following a serious flood in 1665, only three arches and the tiny Romanesque-Gothic chapel remained standing. According to legend, a shepherd by the name of Bénézet built the bridge at God's command.
