In September 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers boarded the "Mayflower" and set out from England for America to live there according to their own religious ideas. As radical puritans they had previously stood up for political freedom and liberal thinking, but also for religious and moral reform. As a result, they were persecuted by both the Church and the Crown. They disembarked at Plymouth Bay in November 1620 and founded a settlement colony there.
