The Severn Bridge at the cradle of the Industrial Revolution

The first bridge made of cast iron was the arched bridge over the Severn at Coalbrookdale in the English Midlands, constructed in 1779. Iron had been smelted in furnaces there since the 17th century. From there, industrialisation spread across the continent of Europe. The new material permitted new constructions such as bridges to carry an increasing volume of traffic.
