The Ponte Vecchio over the Arno in Florence is a well-preserved example of the style of bridge-building widespread in the Middle Ages. In 1565, Duke Cosimo I Medici had a walkway constructed over the row of shops, occupied chiefly by jewellers, according to designs by Giorgio Vasari. Such bridges changed from being purely transport routes to public places with a market character.
