The invention of electric news transfer (telegraphy) made it possible in the mid-19th century to transmit information rapidly across large distances. When the first transatlantic telegraph cable was laid in 1865, Europe and the other continents moved closer together. International agreements on equipment, operating methods and tariffs became necessary: 20 European countries founded the International Telegraph Union in 1865.
