Written and spoken language of the Romans

The spread of Roman characters throughout western and central Europe demonstrates the extent of Roman influence far beyond the borders of the Roman Empire. Latin has also had a strong influence on the vocabulary and grammar of numerous European languages. There is a particularly close link with the Romance languages Italian, Spanish and French.
