The North Atlantic Alliance was founded on 4 April 1949 as a defence community against the expansion of the Soviet Union. Its members include most of the countries of western Europe, Turkey, the United States and Canada. Even after the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, the eastern defence alliance, NATO operations are still required to resolve military conflicts.
