The euro - a European bridge?

An imaginary European bridge features on the back of the euro, as Europe's future single currency has been called since 1995. It thus represents a step up from its predecessor, the "ECU", which was merely a currency unit. A nation's currency is one of its symbols of sovereignty. Adopting a single currency in Europe is therefore highly significant.
