"Europa seated on a bull" has been a frequent motif in European art since Graeco-Roman times. According to the Greek saga, Zeus fell in love with the beautiful Phoenician Princess Europa. He transformed himself into a bull and abducted her across the ocean to Crete. The famous wall fresco in Pompeii shows that this motif also entered Roman culture.
