Cutting off the traditional beards in Russia was one of the reforms introduced by Tsar Peter the Great. Prompted by educational journeys to countries in western Europe, the Russian Tsar modernised his Empire in the military, school and administrative sectors. In so doing, he also sought cultural links with Europe.
