European colonial empires

The European nations started acquiring colonies overseas in the 16th century but most were not established until after 1880 in the era of high imperialism. Virtually the whole African Continent, for example, was divided up among the European nations at the end of the 19th century. The Europeans also introduced their languages in the territories they occupied.
