Monasteries as centres of trade and handicraft

In the Middle Ages, monks played an important role in the economic development of Europe. Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, a combination of religious, economic and social interests led to the founding of numerous monasteries. They fostered handicraft and technical progress and continued economic systems of the Romans and other cultures.
