"Second Rome"

The Hagia Sofia in Constantinople - the old Greek Byzantium - was the centre of the eastern Roman church empire. Following a fire, Emperor Justinian (527-656) had the domed basilica rebuilt. When the Osmans finally conquered the city in 1453, they found the once splendid church in a dilapidated state and converted it into a mosque.
