The Orient in the Occident

The miniature "In the apothecary's shop" is an illustration from the medical teaching manual by the Persian Avicenna which was the standard textbook used by medical faculties throughout Europe for centuries. Works by Arab scholars and their translations of Greek philosophers formed the basis for research and teaching. The trade in medicines and spices lay largely in the hands of Jewish apothecaries.
