One of the illustrations to Goethe's Faust by Eugène Delacroix depicts the central figures in the drama: Faust, Mephistopheles and Gretchen. Goethe's play is the best-known literary rendering of the Faust legend, according to which Faust sells his soul to the Devil. Goethe expanded the legend by adding the Gretchen motif.
