The well-developed road network is the basis for supplying and securing the Empire. In the late imperial era, there were about 290,000 kilometres of paved roads. Following the decline of the Roman Empire the road network was largely neglected. It was not until the roads were extended and rebuilt under Napoleon that the Roman speed of travel was achieved once again.
