Due to the large number of coins in circulation during the trade boom in the Middle Ages, money-changing became a lucrative business. Trading coins with supra-regional validity, such as the Florentine Guilder (or Florin), emerged during the Renaissance. Cashless trade with loans and bills of exchange developed in parallel and led to the European banking system.
