Extent of the Roman Empire

The Danube and the Rhine formed the eastern and northern boundaries of the Roman Empire. Roman provinces lay beyond these two largest European rivers for only a few decades. Roman culture spread most strongly within these borders, as the dispersion of Romance languages shows. Roman characters were adopted in virtually all European countries.
