Roots of European infrastructure

The Romans adopted the semicircular arches in bridge-building and the beginnings of a road network from the Celts. Roman engineers perfected these two features and applied their skills throughout the Empire. Traces of Roman engineering can thus be found in many parts of Europe as a basis for the infrastructure of later centuries.
